What is an emotional support dog?
An emotional support dog (ESD) is a companion animal that provides comfort and emotional stability to individuals with mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other emotional challenges. Unlike service dogs, emotional support dogs do not require specialized training to perform specific tasks, but their presence alone offers therapeutic benefits to their owner.
ESDs are protected under laws like the Fair Housing Act (FHA), which allows them to live in no-pet housing without extra fees, as long as the owner has a letter from a licensed mental health professional. However, they do not have public access rights like service dogs, meaning they cannot enter most businesses or accompany their owner on flights under the Air Carrier Access Act.
